E - Environment

The main problem of Polish environment is air and water pollution and overexploitation of forests from World War II period. The forests have been heavily damaged by contaminants and acid rains, especially near the German border. Water pollution concerns mostly degradation of the Baltic Sea and is the largest polluter of the Baltic, releasing organic compounds and heavy metals every year. The Vistula River and Oder River are major polluters of the Baltic Sea. The region that had suffered the most acute pollution is Upper Silesia. It is a result of the rapid development of heavy industry during the Communist period (1945-1989). What is good about Polish environment is the fact that there is a number of species you can find in whereas they are absent or rare elsewhere (chamois, lynx, wildcat, boar, red deer). has 23 national parks and a number of nature preserves and protected areas to protect endangered species.
